The Text for MA 238

(Applied Differential Equations)

2012 - 2013 Academic Year

Prepared by Prof. Kenneth Howell,

Department of Mathematical Sciences, UAH'ville

Warning:  This site may be out of date.  Go to  www.math.uah.edu/howell/DEtext

or  www.math.uah.edu/~howell/DEtext

for the latest updates.

Below are links to the chapters of the text for MA 238 for the 2012-2013 academic year.  Hardcopies, published by Hayden-McNeil Publishing, are available at the UAH'ville Bookstore for a reasonable fee.

Be aware that this is a new edition as of the Fall of 2012.  It is similar to previous editions, but there are enough changes (mainly corrections) that using older versions is not recommended.

You will need a program such as Adobe Reader to read these files.  If you don't have Adobe Reader or a recent version (at least version 7 -- some of the earlier versions didn't display all the math that well [but who would have anything that old on their computer?]) go to the Adobe Reader Download Page.  (For some reason, there are also problems with some of the fonts in version 9 of Adobe Reader.  But versions 10 and later seem to work fine.)

Some Comments and Warnings:

1)  These links are being provided for your convenience and with the permission of Hayden-McNeil Publishing.  However, printing out the entire text from these links would be silly.  Buy it at the Bookstore.  The cost will be about the same as printing it yourself, and the quality of the printing and paper will be better.  If you choose to print some of these chapters, print them at home on your own printer.  Please do NOT use the printers in the University's computer labs.

2)  Some of the chapters contain material that is not part of the course.  This is material that would be nice to cover if there was time.  Feel free to read unassigned sections on your own for your own enlightenment.

3)  Beware of tpyos and dumb mistookes!  Much of what's below was written hastily and at odd hours, and was not adequately proofread.  Check Errata under Appendices, below, for the latest list of known errors.  If you find what you believe to be a yet unlisted error in any of these chapters, please let me know ("Me" being Prof. Ken Howell,  howell@math.uah.edu).  It would be appreciated if you included " DE Text " in the subject line of your email.

5)  Feel free to send any comments about this webpage and this text to howell@math.uah.edu .
